Scottish Association for Marine Science

The Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) is Scotland’s largest and oldest independent marine science organisation, dedicated to delivering marine science for a healthy and sustainable marine environment through research, education and engagement with society.

Based near Oban on the Scottish west coast, SAMS research strengths include marine renewables, aquaculture, marine biotechnology, marine policy, deep-sea systems, climate change and polar science.

The SAMS group employs over 165 regular staff and a number of seasonal staff on demand.

SAMS is a charitable organisation (009206) with a membership that elects the governing Council. It is also a Company Limited by Guarantee registered in Scotland (SC 009292) and operates two wholly owned subsidiary companies: SAMS Research Services Ltd (SRSL) - a specialist marine consultancy which employs its own staff - and SAMS Ltd.

SAMS is a training hub for the Capturing our Coast (Cocoast) Project.

Cocoast represents a unique collaboration between a wide range of organisations concerned with understanding and conserving marine biodiversity.
