Mooring Analysis

Institution:

Through a number of recent projects, and in line with a growing need to understand the loading effects of moored marine renewable energy converters, Mojo Maritime have successfully developed a strong mooring design and analysis capability:

Mooring design & component specification
Moored load analysis
Unmoored stability & towing analysis
Operational & survival case analysis

Example Projects

Floating Lidar Mooring Design & Installation

During this project, we designed, procured and installed a bespoke mooring solution for a low motion floating lidar platform. Being a deep-draft structure, the platform could not be towed in its upright position, thus requiring a complex tow and offshore transfer analysis. Mojo successfully installed the platform at an offshore wind farm site in 2013.

Floating wave Energy Converter

This project included the design, analysis and installation methodology for a mooring spread used to anchor an innovative wave energy converter. This project required significant analysis to determine the device loads and find an optimal mooring configuration to ensure the device would not pick up the mooring. A highly advanced coupled CFD-hydrodynamic model was required owing to the inseparability of platform response, power take off and mooring reaction. With regards to installation, the rocky seabed and presence of electrical infrastructure meant the installation methodology required significant precision.

Barge Analyses

Mojo Maritime has performed multiple concept and design studies looking at performing drilling operations from moored barges. This included modelling and analysing different barges and loading scenarios for which we developed mooring designs. This included designs requiring the equipment used from the barge to remain within 5 degrees of verticality whilst carrying out operations.

Vessel Mooring Design

We designed a deep water (>1200m) mooring spread and installation methodology, intended to facilitate mooring of large anchor handlers. The main challenges in this project related both to the mooring loads, and the significant depth of deployment.
