Mesocosm facility
Institution:
The mesocosm facility provides scientists with an unparalleled opportunity to conduct research on a variety of topics, including ocean acidification, in a controlled aquatic environment, which closely simulates natural conditions.
Using this approach, scientists can take certain factors from "the real world" into account with their experimental design and results, while maintaining the ability to manipulate a range of environmental factors, such as salinity, pH, and temperature.
The PML mesocosm facility is made up of sixteen 1m3 tanks and eight (750 litre) header tanks for creating acidified or hypoxic seawater. The facility can also be temperature controlled between 7oC and 20oC.
